3 Biggest Challenges Charities Face in December (and How to Solve Them)

The season of giving is just around the corner and the support for charities soars. But with this amazing support, comes the challenges that a lot of people don’t realise charities face during the Christmas time. As a charity or good cause here are some possible solutions for the challenges you might face this festive season.

1. Donation Fatigue

With so many holiday appeals, donors can feel overwhelmed, leading to reduced engagement. To stand out, try to personalise your appeals and show the real impact.

A great way to beat the fatigue is by sharing those heartwarming stories while showing exactly how their contributions help. For example, during 1 Mill Street’s Supporting Warwickshire’s Children in Need, we raised over £5,000 for Shine a Light, a charity supporting children with cancer. This amazing success came from our coffeehouse proceeds and generously matched donations from our founders Nigel and Dessie Shanahan, and Mill Street member Phil Sanger.

The campaign worked because Shine a Light had a clear project that they needed support for. By showing our community exactly where their money goes, we build trust and engagement that gives us the best results.

2. Increased Competition Between Charities

The holiday season sees charities of all sizes competing for attention, making it harder to cut through the noise.

Differentiating yourself with creative campaigns is the best way to showcase your good cause. Have a go at hosting a themed in-person or online fundraiser like a Christmas quiz or a charity Secret Santa. Collaborating with local businesses can also give your campaign an even wider reach. Make Good Grow makes these collaborations so much easier so if you have a project in need of a Passioneer click here

During the Christmas period at 1 Mill Street, we team up with Warwickshire Young Carers and hold a Giving Tree. This tree of gift tags is a small but great way for our patrons to do good easily while learning more about the charity. What a great way to team up with a local business to increase your awareness to their customers.

3. Staff and Volunteer Burnout

December is always packed with deadlines and high-pressure tasks, leaving teams feeling stretched and exhausted especially if they are volunteers and have a job alongside working with the charity.

Showing your appreciation with small, meaningful gestures can boost morale. Many of the good causes we’ve worked with have held thank-you gatherings or volunteer parties which were very well received. A smaller way to show your appreciation by writing personalised notes, or treating the team to festive goodies. Also being realistic about what can be achieved during this period and not shying away from scaling back non-essential activities could be that little thing to help ease the burnout.
