Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2023

The 6th of February marks the start of National Apprenticeship Week. This celebration aims to raise awareness of the benefits of apprenticeships for young people. And, if you didn’t already know – Make Good Grow took two apprentices under our wing earlier this year.

We spoke to El, one of our Digital Marketing Apprentices, about her experience.

What made you decide to take the apprenticeship route?

“Pure chance! After formal education, University wasn’t the route I wanted to take. I was never a classroom learner. I always learned more by doing, then figuring out the ‘theory’ behind it afterwards.”

“I wanted to get straight into working – but I’d never even heard of a Marketing apprenticeship before. I started looking for entry level jobs, and found Make Good Grow’s opening on Indeed!”

How have you found the learning style?

“The ‘hands-on’ experience is an absolute dream. For some, it works to sit in a classroom and be told how to run a marketing campaign. I’d rather just get stuck in, and figure it out along the way! Not everyone learns the same way – so I think it’s great there’s so many options out there now.”

What would you say to a young person thinking about an apprenticeship?

“I couldn’t recommend it enough. It’s easy to feel like University is the only route into a career, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. There’s a real misconception that apprenticeships only exist for trade jobs. Search and ask around. I guarantee you’ll be able to find an apprenticeship in whatever industry you want to explore.”

“Don’t feel like there’s a rush to make a ‘final decision’ once you leave school either! I went to college and studied film after GCSEs, then worked as a barista for a year – then found an apprenticeship at 19! Float around for a bit. Experiment. Find what learning style suits you, and what industry you genuinely want to work in.”

We also spoke to Rob, Managing Director of Make Good Grow.

Why did you decide to take on two apprentices?

“We saw it as a fantastic way to bring in different skill sets and creative ideas, while supporting young people through their training.”

“Ola and El have added value to our organisation and the delivery of our work, while gaining workplace experience and new practical skills. And, avoided a hefty student loan!”
